Sometimes change sneaks up on you and you ease into it a little at a time, barely noticing that anything is different. Other changes are like getting hit by lightning at the same time that you’ve fallen into a giant hole, leaving you wondering which one to deal with first. Even when it is for great reasons, bringing you toward amazing things, change can leave you feeling somewhat disoriented, shocked and panicked, wondering what to do next.

My last week or so has felt a little like that in some ways. I am really enjoying the challenge of building a new business from scratch, being creative and coming up with so many ideas that I don’t have the time to do them all! It’s been scary but exciting shifting directions to become self-employed. I am loving getting to meet with new people, as well as getting to know some folks that have been in my life for a while, a little bit better.

I’ve been thinking a lot about “change” this week and how we put so much energy into the “what” of it. Things like: “What is different?” What does this mean for me?” “What do I do now?” What if I don’t like it?” And goodness forbid: “What if it doesn’t work?”

We humans are amazing creatures of habit who like things to be the way they have always been because that’s safe. We don’t have to risk anything if we keep things the same. By spending so much time and thought on the “what” of change, we can really start to doubt and second guess ourselves.

This week, I asked myself to consider the “why” of change instead, and it has been a pretty amazing thought shift. I asked myself, and answered, the following questions: “Why did I decide to change careers?” “Why would things being different be so bad?” “If I do my best and try, why wouldn’t this work?”

This change in thought process has really helped me to feel more excitement about the changes in my life in general. I challenged myself to do something everyday this week that I’ve been putting off or avoiding doing. The result is that I have made some great connections, learned about a few things, got to spend more time with my family, cook some awesome meals and relax. I actually read a book this week!!!

Change and I are making friends and we’re going on a journey together, one step at a time. Today, I get to lead the way. Maybe tomorrow, change gets a turn but either way, “why not?”
